Tickle It With a HoeClick to see the finished cross-stitch

This gardening sampler is bursing with pansies and produce! The saying, ‘Tickle it with a hoe and it will laugh into harvest’ is a reminder to us all about the benefits of a light hand. This pattern is perfect for gardeners, or anyone who has to wait out a white winter before getting back to the soil.

Stitchers will love the stories about gardens and honest home-cooked meals! Part of the premiere Traditions line, this full color chart has easy-to-read symbols. It opens up to an oversized 17½” x 23½” color pattern. A gift for tired eyes!

Stitched on aida or evenweave; DMC and Anchor codes.

Michelle talks about this pattern
Around about January and February a gardener in Canada starts getting itchy for the feel of dirt underneath her nails. I know I do!

This old English proverb surfaced one cold winter's eve as I perused gardening books, feeding my need for green. This sampler celebrates the bounty our gardens bestow.

Other uses for this pattern
The pansies would be a delightful sight stitched above a pocket on a favourite cotton shirt. You might consider just the word 'harvest' and a row of the vegetables applied to the pocket of a canvas tote bag.

Or try cross-stitching 'Tickle it with a hoe' – plus a row of carrots, radishes or apples – on a bookmark (what about a Christmas stocking?) for your favourite gardener.

What about changing the background colour to something lighter?
Joan wanted to stitch "Tickle It with a Hoe" on a light coloured fabric instead of a dark fabric.

She was concerned that if she used the chosen greens for the lettering at the top of the piece, they might fade into the new background. She asked for alternate greens that would work on light coloured fabric.

Colours chosen for shaded lettering on dark coloured fabric
Top colour, light green is DMC 3348 Yellow Green light / Anchor 264

Bottom colour, dark green is DMC 906 Parrot Green medium / Anchor 256

For light coloured fabric try these dark greens instead:
Top colour, light green DMC 702 Kelly Green / Anchor 239

Bottom colour, dark green DMC 699 Christmas Green / Anchor 923
